Athens, Greece

We arrived in Piraeus, Greece in mid-October for a 5 day visit. The 1st day in Greece, Chelsea and I set out to explore Athens. From our ship, we walked to the metro station and took the 25 minute train ride to the Acropolis. We arrived at the base of the Acropolis in the morning and were blown away by the size and beauty of the Parthenon. It was constructed of marble and completed in 438 B.C. for the Greek goddess Athena. It served as a treasury and eventually an armory when it was blown up in 1687 during a Venetian bombardment. It is currently under a 40 year restoration project, so scaffolding and mason workers shuffled around the giant structure while we were there. After taking in the beauty of the Parthenon and the magnificent view of Athens, we went to the Temple of Zeus. It stood quietly in an open plot of land surrounded by the hectic streets of Athens. The massive hand chiseled white columns left you wondering how they could be constructed in the 5th Century B.C., let alone modern day. As the day came to an end, we enjoyed the local foods of Greece such as moussaka, an eggplant, minced meat, and custard top casserole, along with a Greek salad and Greek coffee.
